Sustainability
As developers, our job is to provide places for people to live. But regardless of postcode, we all live on this planet. We have to protect it by living – and building – sustainably.
The Site
We’re proud to be building Brunswick Wharf in one of the most beautiful corners of the UK. Bideford lies at the heart of the North Devon National Landscape, as well as the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere – one of just 7 Biosphere Reserves in the UK.
It felt critical to not only acknowledge Bideford’s role in the local ecosystem, but to actively celebrate it. That’s why we’re aiming to make Brunswick Wharf a showcase in sustainable development. Here’s how we’re making that happen.
Carbon Neutral Construction
We are targeting a carbon neutral construction process, working in partnership with the North Devon Biosphere to offset embodied carbon generated during the build.
Sustainable Regeneration
We don’t believe in developing greenfield sites when there are brownfield opportunities in stunning locations. That’s why we picked the Brunswick Wharf site – despite the associated demolition cost, flood defence measures and a more complex planning process.
Biodiversity Net Gain
Brunswick Wharf is located beside an important marine SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). We’re committed to delivering at least a 110% net gain in biodiversity, which will include:
- New green spaces
- Planted areas
- Bird and bat boxes
- Habitat enhancements for local wildlife
Fabric First Approach
We’re adopting a Fabric First approach to design, which prioritises the energy performance of the building itself before relying on mechanical systems. This means:
- High levels of insulation to help regulate internal temperatures
- Triple glazing where appropriate
- Airtight construction
- Thermal bridge minimisation
Together, these measures will reduce energy demand, cut carbon emissions, and increase comfort for residents.
Renewable Energy Sources
We’ll be installing renewable energy sources throughout the site, such as Air Source Heat pumps and PV solar panels, to reduce ongoing energy bills for residents and empower them to live sustainably.
Low Energy Costs
We believe in building efficient properties, keeping costs affordable for hardworking people. We’re aiming to achieve EPC A ratings for the new homes, lowering energy bills and minimising environmental impact.
Sustainable Amenities
Living more sustainably should be easy. The reality is that where you live can make it hard. Here’s how we’re making sustainable lifestyles easily achievable for Brunswick Wharf residents.
EV Charging
We’ll be providing access to public and private EV charging points, allowing residents (and the wider community) to travel sustainability.
Car Share Scheme
We’re looking to introduce an EV car share scheme on-site, allowing residents to split costs as well as reducing vehicle emissions.
Cycle Parking
We’ll provide new public and private cycle spaces to complement access to the Tarka Trail cycle path, benefitting both residents and the people of Bideford.
